What Are Curtain Bangs?
Curtain bangs are often referred to as a ‘gringe’, which is a shortened version of ‘grown-out fringe’. They’re long bangs that part at the centre of the face and frame it like a curtain. Typically, the middle will be the shortest point, and it will taper to a longer length on the side. The hairstyle has been thrust back into popular culture in recent years by celebs like Daisy Edgar-Jones, Dakota Johnson, and Halle Berry.
In the past, bangs have picked up a bad reputation for being hard to pull off and difficult to maintain, but curtain bangs are rapidly changing the way this hairstyle is perceived. They’re well suited to all face shapes and can easily be customised to suit your vibe. They can be rolled towards the face or swept away, curly or coily, short or long, and still turn heads.
How To Cut Curtain Bangs
When done right, curtain bangs are the perfect face-framing touch to any style. But cutting them yourself is far easier said than done; that’s why we always recommend you head to a salon you can trust, like Lacy Locks, instead. If you’re feeling brave and want to take on the challenge yourself, these are some important things you’ll need to bear in mind.
Start Longer Than You Think
While it may seem obvious, you can’t rush curtain bangs. Your hair will need to be at least a couple of centimetres longer than where you want the bangs to sit before you cut them. It’s also worth thinking about how close to the eyes you want your bangs to sit and whether it’s worth obscuring your vision for the perfect bangs – we’ll let you be the judge of that!
The Bangs Need Blending
Many people who decide to cut curtain bangs at home realise immediately after the first snip that it’s a much trickier task than they anticipated. In order to get them to frame your face in the way they’re supposed to, the bangs will need to blend into the rest of your hair. While professional hairdressers will have access to all the tools necessary to ensure a seamless blend, unfortunately, your kitchen scissors won’t suffice. So, before you start chopping off chunks of your hair, you should invest in a pair of thinning shears.
Cut When Dry
It might be tempting to cut your hair right after you’ve washed it, but that would be a big mistake! Your hair will sit very differently when dry compared to when it’s wet, particularly if you have naturally wavy or curly hair. So, make sure you wait until it’s bone dry before you get stuck in with the scissors; this way, you’ll have greater accuracy in terms of the finished look.
How To Style Curtain Bangs With Straighteners
Curtain bangs are perfect for that effortlessly chic look, so it only makes sense that styling them should be super easy. One of the most straightforward ways to get your curtain bangs looking on point is with a straightener.
To begin, you’ll need to seperate the bangs from the rest of your hair. You can do this by brushing the front part of your hair forward so it covers your face and tucking the rest of your hair behind your ears. Then, grab the bangs section of your hair and poke your finger through this bunch of hair horizontally. This will help you separate the longer parts of your bangs from the shorter parts.
Now it’s time to go in with the straighteners. Make sure they’re not turned up too high because the wispy bits of hair around your face are especially fragile, and high heat will damage them. Starting with the longer section of your bangs, move your straightener down towards the end of your hair before curving underneath the bangs. Make sure you don’t curl it; instead, aim for a slight bend. Repeat this process with the shorter section.
Finally, combine both sections of bangs and toss it back over your head to join it with the rest of your hair. When you bring it back forward, your curtain bangs should neatly frame your face. Curtain bangs are particularly prone to becoming oily as they sit at the front of your face, so be sure to stock up on products like our shampoo for hair extensions and conditioner for hair extensions to keep your bangs in tip-top condition.

How To Blow Dry Curtain Bangs
One of the most common problems you’ll face when it comes to your curtain bangs is getting them to curve outwards rather than coming inwards and covering your face. The key to getting perfect face-framing bangs is in your blow-drying technique.
Similarly to the straightener styling technique, you’ll need to begin by sectioning your bangs into smaller bits of hair. Take a small part of one of your bangs and pull it forward. Pull to the side and wrap it around a round hair brush. Turn on your hair dryer and hold it up to the brush. Slowly twist the hair brush and continue pulling forward until you reach the end of the hair, and it drops out of the brush. Once one bang is sitting as you’d like, repeat the process on the other side.

How To Curl Curtain Bangs
As mentioned previously, curtain bangs are among the most versatile hairstyles, so it’s super easy to switch up your look if you’re ever looking for a refresh. With that in mind, curling your curtain bangs is a lot easier than you might think, and it’s an excellent way to add a new element to your style.
All you’ll need to achieve windswept-looking locks is a curling iron. Begin by separating your bangs from the rest of your hair and get hold of the entire bang on one side. With the clamp facing outwards, wrap your hair around the barrel and clamp it in place. In one controlled movement, pull the iron diagonally across and away from your face, keeping the tension in the hair. Repeat the process with the other bang before regrouping it with the rest of your hair.
